LES QUATRE PILIERS

Valentin Desloges

Domaine des Quatre Piliers, nestled in the picturesque Loire Valley within Touraine, stands as a vibrant yet modest winery making significant strides in the French wine landscape. Under the guidance of the gifted young winemaker, Valentin Desloges, the estate is dedicated to crafting exceptional wines that embody the region's distinct terroir.

Valentin Desloges, originally from the Cher Valley and now 28 years old, absorbed invaluable wisdom from respected mentors spanning France: Vincent Sipp in Alsace, the Todeschini family at Château Mangot in Saint-Émilion, Thierry and Paul Pillot in Chassagne-Montrachet, and Raphaël Coche at Coche-Dury in Meursault. These varied experiences provided him with a deep understanding of vineyard and cellar techniques.

Valentin returned to the Loire Valley to establish his own domaine, Domaine des Quatre Piliers. Spanning ten hectares between Noyers and Saint-Aignan, his primary focus lies in transitioning to full organic viticulture, supplemented by the application of biodynamic principles.

Nestled within the picturesque Touraine AOC valley, Domaine des Quatre Piliers stands as a testament to the artistry of winemaking. Spanning 25 acres, this atypical vineyard is meticulously divided into nearly 15 parcels, each a unique microcosm of terroir. From the smallest of plots to the largest, barely exceeding a hundred square meters, Valentin Desloges cultivates an array of varietals, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Cot (Malbec), all organically tended since their acquisition.

Enveloped by clay and limestone soils, the vineyard benefits from the gentle embrace of the nearby Cher river, whose temperate influence complements the region's oceanic climate. Yet, the true marvel lies beneath the earth's surface, where a labyrinth of tuffeau quarries weaves its way up to 30 meters deep. This subterranean realm not only fosters a delicate balance of minerals but also serves as a natural ventilation system, nurturing the vines above.

Each parcel tells a story of its own, from "Les Puits aux Chiens" with its venerable Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin vines, to the sun-kissed slopes of "Bernardières," where ancient Cot vines bask in the rich, sulphate-laden soils. Meanwhile, "Bel Air" and "Quatre Piliers" reveal a tapestry of Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir, each expressing its unique character amidst a backdrop of cool hilltops and warmer foothills.

It is this harmonious blend of warm and cool microclimates that defines Domaine des Quatre Piliers, echoing Valentin Desloges's vision of winemaking as a delicate dance between robustness and delicacy. With each vintage, Desloges strives to capture the essence of his terroir, crafting wines that embody the soul of the Loire Valley.

The work in the cellar is meticulously focused, particularly on extracting the most delicate juice. Press cycles are closely monitored, ensuring that only the finest portions of the pressed wines are retained for the Domaine bottlings.

The tuffeau caves maintain a consistent temperature, allowing the wines to ferment slowly with ambient yeasts. Whites undergo fermentation in cask, while reds ferment in stainless steel before being transferred to various cask sizes. A small portion of new oak is used for the whites. Notably, Valentin is now crafting his own barrels using wood from his domaine, in collaboration with François Frères.

Given its dedication to excellence and sustainability, its remarkable vineyards, and the skill of Valentin, this winery is poised to achieve iconic status within the region.
